Captain Stewart was in charge when James McLevy was recruited into the night watch and also recognised his potential when he offered to resign in 1833 after a brief illness, promoting him instead. Without Captain Stewart, we would not have had Edinburgh’s first detective.

Captain Stewart was born in 1797, around the same time as McLevy, marrying Janet, 15 years his junior in 1829. They had 4 children; Margaret, Alexander, Janet and Mary and lived at 8 Teviot Row. He was superintendent until 1842 when he left to become the governor of Perth prison.
