William Mulholland, police officer

William Mullholland signature

William Mulholland is James McLevy’s assistant. He was born about 1802 in Ireland, possibly Armagh, and joined the Edinburgh police force in the same year as McLevy in May 1830. One of three officers to be recruited that year.

In the 1851 Census (685/2 10A) he lives at 79 Pleasance with his wife Mary aged 47 and has three daughter , Mary 16, Jane 14 and Sarrah 11.

He disappears from records at this time and is likely to have died before 1853 as he does not appear in the list of officer in the Police Establishment Book that year. His widow Mary and daughter Jane continue living in the Newington area of Edinburgh until Mary’s death in 1873 in Brown Street.
