Research on this site
Reading the evidence
- Check the date of the event separately from the date of the newspaper, book or modern web article.
- Compare names, addresses, charges and outcomes across independent records. A shared title does not prove two accounts describe the same event.
- Search spelling variants such as McLevy, M’Levy and McLevie.
- Treat testimony and reporting as evidence of what was said or recorded; distinguish that from a conclusion established by several sources.
- Historical images and modern reconstructions serve different purposes. Check captions and provenance before using either as evidence.
