This morning, three girls, averaging twelve years of age, were placed at the bar, on a charge of having stolen from various carts in the Greenmarket, quantities of potatoes, cabbages, apples, &c. They denied the charge with great pertinacity, but unfortunately… for them, they were observed in the act of stealing by the Police officers Mulholland and M’Livie, who are in the habit of attending public places together for the purpose of watching the motions of the thieves who may be present, and who have, within these six weeks, detected about 70. individuals in the act of committing thefts of various kinds. The Magistrate spoke highly of the activity of the officers, and said they well merited a reward. The girls were sent to Bridewell for 30 days.
