There seems to be a murderous mania getting abroad among the married men of our city, at least, the records of the Police Court, for this week, would lead one to think so. On Monday, one residing at Fountainbridge was remitted to the Sheriff for assaulting and striking his wife to such a degree, as to require her to be sent to the Infirmary her life having been placed in Imminent danger.

Yesterday, an ill-looking fellow named Jolin Bain, Tailor, Surgeon Square, was placed at the bar, charged with an assault upon the person of his wife on Friday last, equalled in atrocity only by the revolting case of the two Gilmerton carters. Dr Thatcher stated the case in an undertone to the Magistrate, and added, that he had never before witnessed anything so shocking. The life of the poor woman has been in danger, but there is at present some hope of recovery. Bain has been remitted to the Sheriff. Before leaving the bar he sought to be liberated on bail, but was informed, in reply, that the walls of a cell in the Lock-up-House should be the boundary to his movements for some time to come.

A person, named Logan, was sent to Bridewell for thirty days, also for assaulting his wife, and being in the constant habit of so doing. This case, although certainly less enormous than the one above noticed, was more than ordinarily aggravated. The wife stated in Court, that for nearly four years she had been terrified into submission to let an infamous female live in the same house with her, who, during that period; had had two children to the defender, that the usage which she (the wife) had received all along was cruel in the extreme, and that she had been frequently on her way to lodge a complaint against him in the Police-office, but that until now she had always relented, fearful as t well to meet his resentment as to expose him and her own situation to the odium of the world.

Edward Thorpe, a young lad, was remitted to the Sheriff, for, having broken into the New Market at Stockbridge, and stolen a quantity of meat and other articles. He pled guilty; and we understand he has stated that he is anxious to get a free passage to New South Wales, as he is tired of living in this country.
