TO THE EDITOR OF THE WITNESS.
Sir,—The public are anxious to discover what punishment has been administered to M’Levy, the criminal officer, for his late extraordinary conduct, in taking a man under his protection (by way of), and abandoning him to a brutal Popish mob. Are we still to be taxed for this kind of protection? The whole administration of justice will be covered with suspicion, unless such a man is punished in the most exemplary manner and in the most public way. A RATEPAYER.
The Witness Wednesday, June 26, 1850
This letter appears to be a public reaction to the previous “Assault in the Cowgate” case, where M’Levy was accused of abandoning the victim, Jeremiah Clark.
