Rape Suspect Apprehended

On Friday afternooon, that active officer, James M’Levie, apprehended in the Cowgate an Irishman of the name of Denis Cooney, who had absconded from the county of Cavan under a charge of rape, committed in that county in August 1839. His description in the Dublin Hue and Cry led to his discovery. M’Levie having observed him in the Cowgate, sent notice to the authorities in Dublin, who immediately transmitted a warrant for his apprehension. On being seized he made some resistance, but he was secured and lodged in the Police Office.
